+ My piercing is ‘infected’/has a lump/is irritated…..what should I do?
99.9% of the time your piercing is not infected, it is just irritated.
Signs of infection: Bright red, extremely swollen, hot to touch, yellow-green pus.
Signs of irritation: Slightly red, sore, swollen, white-yellow discharge and/or skin bumps.
If your piercing is actually infected then you need to see a doctor for antibiotics.
Piercings can take a while to fully heal especially if it’s an area that can be slept on, caught easy etc or if you are sick/run down. They can get easily irritated. Sometimes wee bumps can also form if the body is producing too much collagen (overhealing) or getting irritated. If you are young & female then unfortunately you have an even bigger chance of this happening.
If you have an inflamed/irritated piercing: This is absolutely manageable using a salt soak or compress. Please do it 1-2 times a day for 5-10 minutes at a time. This should make a big difference within 1-2 weeks. If the area has pus then you can pop a thin layer of Crystaderm (from the supermarket or chemist) on it in the evening after cleaning. For the salt soak/compress use 1/4-1/2tsp non iodised sea salt to 250mls of pre boiled water. Make this mixture as warm as you can handle without it burning and place in a shallow cup/bowl to soak area in, or use a cotton pad/ball and compress. We prefer the soak method if you can :) Be persistent and consistent.
